About Well Volume Calculator

Understanding the volume of water stored in a well is essential for anyone managing groundwater resources — from small-scale farmers in rural communities to civil engineers and water supply planners. The Well Volume Calculator is a practical tool that helps you estimate how much water is currently in your well using simple measurements: diameter, total depth, and static water depth.

This tool is highly useful for:

  • Rural water projects and borehole planning
  • Irrigation system management
  • Pump sizing and scheduling
  • Water storage planning for homes, farms, or small communities

Wells are commonly used globally where piped water is limited or unreliable. But without a clear sense of how much water your well holds, it’s hard to make efficient use of the resource. This calculator removes the guesswork and provides fast, accurate results in cubic meters — including the option to calculate multiple well volumes for flushing, treatment, or system design.

It’s ideal for boreholes, hand-dug wells, or any cylindrical well structure.

How Well Volume Calculator Works

The calculator uses the geometry of a cylinder to compute the volume of water stored in a well.

Input:

  • Well Diameter (m)
  • Total Well Depth (m)
  • Static Water Depth (m)

What It Calculates:

  1. Water Column Height = Total Depth – Static Water Depth

  2. Well Volume (m³) = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × Water Column Height (π ≈ 3.1416)

  3. Total Well Volume – Displays the single well volume in cubic meters.

  4. Three Well Volumes = Well Volume × 3

Useful for calculating triple volume for flushing or disinfection.

FAQs for Well Volume Calculator

What is static water depth?

It’s the distance from the top of the well to the water surface when the well is at rest (not being pumped).

Why do I need to know my well’s volume?

It helps you estimate available water, plan pumping schedules, and determine treatment dosages (e.g., for disinfection).

Is this calculator only for boreholes?

No — it works for any cylindrical well, including boreholes, hand-dug wells, and tube wells.

Can I calculate for a dry or seasonal well?

Yes, just enter the current static water depth to find how much water is present at that time.

Can I use this for tank volume instead?

You could, but for tanks, a tank volume calculator with different shapes might be more accurate.

Are the results in liters or cubic meters?

By default, this calculator shows results in cubic meters (m³). Multiply by 1,000 to convert to liters.
